Both of our recommended payment gateways provide 2 types of services: Gateway Only Services or Merchant Account Services. This articles will attempt to explain the difference.

Gateway Only Services.
If you already have a merchant bank account, this is the service for you. If you already accept credit card payments via and EFT/POS terminal or via an online facility provided by your bank then you will already have a merchant facility with your bank. By obtaining a gateway only service from a recommended payment gateway you will process payments via the selected payment gateway directly into your existing merchant facility. Any risk associated with the payment rests with your bank, as a result, the setting up of this service is fast (the payment gateways suggest it can be done the same day) and the payment gateway documentation requirements are much less than that required for them to provide the merchant facility.
We strongly recommend using a gateway only service if you have an existing merchant facility with your bank.

Merchant Account Services
If you do not have an existing merchant account with your bank then you have two options: Speak to your bank about obtaining a merchant account (if you have a good relationship with your bank and stable financial history with them, this may be the simplest solution) or apply for a merchant facility with your preferred payment gateway. this will require some detailed documentation to be provided, see here.
